I had to clean the pickup on my 83. Is the 81 a 126 or 116? (Is that the right model???) If you're not in an area of rust and corrosion it's likely the filler assembly. Went out this morning to inspect the car and give it an oil change. There was a large oily stain under the trunk. Diesel fuel. The trunk cavity on the passengers side had a pool of it. I sopped it out with paper towels. Can't see where it's coming from. Hopefully it's a hose and not tank corrosion. It's not easy to get at the tank. I removed the rear seats - no joy. A solid bulkhead. Now I'm trying to remove the sheet metal between the tank and the trunk. I removed all the visible 8mm screws ( 3 on the top, 3 on the bottom ) but that sheet metal still won't budge. I'm thinking there's some more screws hidden under the padding. Anybody have experience in this area? Confirmed that it's 99% likely your filler lines are leaking. Rubber parts likely dried out. Go drive a hundred miles or so to drop the fuel level a bit. :) Might be able to tighten connectors? Been a long time since I worked on a 126. 1999? It's a fabulous garage - 3 cars worth, with sheetrocked walls and epoxy-coated floor. But just now it's full of junque. I want that car INSIDE so I can work on it and leave it in an "as worked on" state overnight. The car has not been kept in anyplace "with lots of rust and corrosion" EVER. I'm the second owner - I bought it from my real estate broker. The location of the fuel pool - passenger side trunk cavity - makes me think it's the filler neck. I did recently fill it up really full - maybe the neck is leaking? - Jerry ######## john @ wagoneers.com ######## "A thorough knowledge of the Bible is worth more than a college education" - Theodore Roosevelt ######## two word summary: Trust Jesus ######## ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 18 Jan 2013 18:11:19 -0500 From: "FParker" Subject: RE: [db] 300SD fuel leak Your on to something there John. I had some diesel smell in the trunk of my 124 and it turned out to be a bad fuel cap gasket. When full, the excess fuel from the sloshing action was dribbling past the cap and down the sides of the filler tube into the trunk. - -----Original Message----- From: owner-diesel-benz@digest.net [mailto:owner-diesel-benz@digest.net] On Behalf Of john Sent: Thursday, January 17, 2013 6:03 PM To: jerry@tr2.com; dbl Subject: Re: [db] 300SD fuel leak The access panel is only for the fuel connections to engine on DS.
