Put together the yellow 81 300SD, which had been languishing in its parking spot for a few months since the fuel filler leaked. OK, it's all together. Still need to replace the filler neck seal, but I can do that any time. On to the blue car! That's my first diesel benz, a 1985 300D. It's been languishing even longer than the SD, about 8 months. It needs a power brake booster. The new booster has been languishing in my garage for the same time. This morning, the battery was as dead as a coffin nail. No lights, no beeps, no nothing. So I dragged a charger out there and charged it for an hour or so, then gave it a jump off the yellow car. Considering how long it had been sitting, I gave it some pumps with the little primer pump. Which is leaky, but only when you're pumping. I think. Anyway, it started instantly. Vrrooom! I removed the brake booster. The firewall side fasteners are pretty buried. Especially the upper L/H one. That was looking like one of those fasteners that takes half the afternoon, and makes you wish you'd chosen a different hobby. But once I figured out the exact technique, it wasn't too bad. Took a 1/4" 13mm socket, a 6" extender, a 1/4" to 3/8" adapter, a 3/8" flexible extender, and a 3/8" inch 5" extender after that. Pulling the brake booster out, I accidentally popped the reservoir off the master cylinder. Brake fluid all over! Shoved it back onto the cylinder. Guess I'll need to bleed the brakes. The old booster is *wet* at the vacuum line. I believe that means I need a new vacuum pump. Urk. Does anybody know the ins and outs of these pumps? I seem to remember that there were design changes, "good" pumps and "bad" pumps. Are all the pumps compatible - bolt onto the car, and fit the outlet? The car is a bit of an abortion - before I bought it, somebody had removed the original engine, and installed an engine from a 1980 300TD wagon. They mixed and matched accessories to come up with a complete car. So it has: * The trap oxidizer * The computer from the '85, but disabled * The remote air filter from the '85. * The 300TD hydraulic pump, but stubbed off It looks like I can spend anywhere between $15 for a rebuild kit ( with a new diaphragm ) to $485 for a new pump. I am more comfortable at the $15 level :). Might it be practical to pop the top plate off and replace the diaphragm without actually pulling the pump? Those fasteners are easier to get to. If I remove the pump, will the oil fall out of the engine? So the $15 kit is off the table, and solutions start at $100 on Ebay. I will probably get this: http://mercedessource.com/files/imagefield/product/latevackit.jpg ...Which comes with instructions and a modicum of special tools. - Jerry ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 22 Mar 2013 21:01:47 -0700 From: john Subject: Re: [db] An interesting W123 video nice video... almost started looking on Craigslist for another one... :) ----- - ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- -o|||||o- Linux: the choice of a GNU generation http://WAGONEERS.COM Snohomish, WA- where Jeeps don't rust, they mold ...shop AMSOIL directly at: http://AMSOIL.com/redirect.cgi?zo=283461 - ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- "A thorough knowledge of the Bible is worth more than a college education" Theodore Roosevelt (26th President (1901-09), 1858-1919) RTM: TRSTGZS - ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- On 03/22/2013 02:23 PM, Marc Z wrote: > http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fUN_c2-u3KU ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 26 Mar 2013 12:16:46 -0400 From: Allen Zylstra Subject: [db] *Allen Zylstra* *************************** allen's account was compromised... link removed ------------------------------ End of diesel-benz-digest V1 #3737 **********************************
