I just had a thought (a rare moment, too bad it couldn't have been towards
world peace or something:) ). I know some of you have been considering
converting to throttle body injection. Wouldn't you need to block off the
heat riser for this set up? Would that also go for the riser valve in the
exhaust?

I'll bet you'd be suprised what a stock Cherokee or Wagoneer weighs. I'll
bet a stock one is probably 4,500lbs. Ours last time I checked was 5,100 and
it's at least 5,200 at the moment, and that's not even with full fuel tanks
(we have an aux tank).

Perhaps I've been laxed, but they all seem to be far, far away. Either that
or I missed something along the way here.

Hey, everyone. Ole Bessy was sitting on all fours today! Got the rear axle
in this morning. Added the two lower springs from the '72 parts Wag to the
existing spring pack, making 7 leaves instead of the original 5. Raised the
rear end about 2.5". That should settle down to about 1-1.5" which is what
I was looking for. Cool!

Had to put her down on the ground to measure the driveshaft working length,
then raised the rear back up to finish the brakes.
The rear brakes are about halfways installed. New shoes, spring kit, drums,
and star adjusters. Had to wait a day to find some new adjuster cables.

Picking up my new driveshaft tomorrow, from Connecticut Driveshaft. Was
going to go w/ Six States, who did the front driveshaft, but ran out of
time. This new one should be fine, since I'm going with a thicker wall
tubing and heavier-duty slip joint. New Spicer u-joints too. Also picking
up the new RS5000s tomorrow.

Will have everything put together tomorrow and should be driving Friday!
Finally! Just in time for the inaugural NEFSJA outing this weekend!

Bruce, on my 350 the air conditioning bracket and power steering bracket
swivel on eachother, but I think they can be separated. I'll check under
the hood tomorrow to see for sure. I've been thinking of doing the same
thing since the AC bracket looks ugly. It currently holds the coil (the
dual fuel feed on my 4-barrel carb runs right through the area where the
coil originally sat); but I want to move the coil to the fenderwell
instead.

Do you still need many items on your list? With Ole Bessy's axle upgrades
nearing completion I will have time to check for those items.

I think that perhaps that later on they got a little
more conservative in parceling out capacity measures
then they had in the past due to possible liabilty suits.
back in the 60's that wasn't so much of a concern.
my guess is that the actual practical capabilities are
proabably far greater then an 800 pound carrying
capacity. (if I am understanding all this correctly)

Lets try this a different way.......in my 1961 Willys truck I can carry
over 2,000lbs and not get a ticket for being over weight. The truck sets
level and even rides nice. It also has 10 (ten) leaves in each spring

Hello guys,
I think Karl Striech (sp?) was talking about organizing a meet in
the north of CA. (He was in Napa, if I remember correctly)Hey Karl, are you
still with us?
Anyway, I think we should be able to meet somewhere central. How about the
bay are somewhere?
Any swap meets going on down there? We should have about a dozen people at
least in CA.
I sorta cried off doing the PNW thing 'cos of the time and distance problem,
but would love to meet some of my 'wacky' So. Cal neighbors <bg>
Anyway, if anyone has any ideas, email me off list so the PNW boys don't get

You bet. Thanks David. I'm still looking for the "perfect" computer for my
injection & ignition system. I have every thing figured-out except for the
computer and the crank position sensor.

Fel-Pro (the gasket people) just came out with a computer that looks
promising as well. Now I have two new ones to check out.

We ran into another little obstacle a few days ago. Slid my shiny new custom
Manley Race Flo single groove stainless valves into the intake guides and
guess what? ...they're too big. Got out the mic. and sure enough 2.12".
Ooops...should have measured them a long time ago. Not sure what to do at this
point. My new seats are in the heads and have a 3-angle cut for 2.02 valves. I
think we'll just turn down the existing valves because having a new set made
would take quite awhile. But, this engine is not going to be done this year
so...?

I know that we have loaded up my 84 with over 1300 pounds of sand

me (115lbs) my husband (185lbs) plus the two back packs full of food

I don't know if the following applies to Model 20s in the '80 & up FSJs or

For anyone interested here is what Ron Waters had to say about AMC 20 gear
swaps: Sounds like good news to some of us..

 From: rbw-at-netime.com (Ron Waters)

Summit is correct... The cutoff point is 2.87.. Gear ratio's higher than 2.87
(higher ratio=lower number ie: 2.73) require a different ring gear carrier...

I know that 2.87 to 4.56 AMC ring and pinions use the same carrier (std or
posi makes no difference)as I have set up these ratios.. I am told that lower
ratios ie: 4.88 and 5 series will also work, but I don't know that for a
fact...

Hey gang.......... !!
Eddie's cominngg.......................!!!!!!!!!

Looks like insurance concerns have been satisfactorily
addressed, and now all I have to do is some _major_ " minor"
work on the poor beast so that it will survive the trip without
me being to worried. <:0
Not sure how many passengers will be with me; possibly my
2 girls, 11 + 13 yrs, and maybe one of my brothers named Darryl.

Plans will be for either a very long day trip, or more desirable,
spend the night in the area. John M., can you scout out some
camping spots, preferably with amenities? Gord & my gang
could camp out for the night, rather than chance a breakdown
on the hwy in the dark.

Gord in Kelowna,

If your Mom, I mean SO gives you the go ahead to come down
& play, let me know and we'll meet up. I live in west MR, near
203 and Lougheed. You know where the Chrysler + Ford dealerships
are, and Burger King ? I am only a few blocks from there.
We could meet either in MR or PoCo ( Port Coquitlam, for John) <g>
or any other point that's convenient. Let me know................

Mike,

I think this is pretty common. I get the same let down reading
computer magazines and books... WHERE's THE BEEF????

It's frustrating to get these magazines and read 'em and not really
get the good information you want... It's rare...

(on the other hand, it's hard work putting a magazine or a web page
together, there is so much more going on then just the content...
style, form, spelling (ha!), layout, deadlines, etc... I know some
of the pages I've put up are terribly pathetic. You guys are too
kind. There is so much more I want to do with this stuff... But
time is always a bitter enemy... Seems like we're all equal in the
time department, but time is still a leveler of men... Some people
just fritter their lives away in front of the idiot box, some of us
fritter it away doing email... <g>, others actually do something
with the time and sometimes even make a difference...

I know I can use a major dose of wisdom in the area of time
management... I could also use some decision making ability, I have
too many interests because I can't decide what it is I want to do...
You ought to look at my bookshelves... there are so many different
areas of highly specialized subjects it's ridiculous... I need to
FOCUS on one, or two things... I'm trying to FOCUS on UNIX at
work... at home I need to focus on my family (hey, what a cool name
for a radio program or something... :-), but instead I keep playing
around with computers, jeeps and so on... But, if I don't do those
things I find myself sitting in front of the tube with my family...
That ain't spending quality time with my family... Turn the tube
off and you have a room full of bored and boring people... sheesh...
the never ending struggles of life and time...

and no, I'm not having a mid-life crisis... I mean having three
jeeps, playing on computers 10 to 15 hrs a day, sleeping for 4 to 5
hrs a day and taking Tae Kwon Do is normal for a 40 year old, isn't
it??? <g>

Oh, yeah, back to the articles... I've found it's hard to get
substance and the essence of a subject out of people that have not
fully synthesized the information. They have a superficial
understanding of the topic, they don't KNOW it... Look at how you
guys kid me about waxing poetic or lyrical about FSJ's, do you think
I could go off like that if I hadn't thought about it a little bit???
(What I should be doing is going off like that about the Bible,
because it's a lot more important in the grand scheme of things...
:-)

well, back to the list...

Then there are those of us that pull into the Truck Weigh stations,
or sneak onto the Dump Truck scales at the top soil place in the
valley or buy rocks at the yard or haul scrap metal and have our
rigs weighed on official scales... :-)

When you start subtracting the added ballast, you know like wife and
kids, high lift jacks, tools, etc. the weight does drop into that
range you mentioned...

So when I say Old Blue tips the scale at 5,200lbs, that's with the
ballast and maybe a big mac or two... :-)

I'd be happy to use some of this space... I mean 10 meg just doesn't
go as far as it used to...

Seriously, this might be a good way of backing up the FSJ sites,
doc's IFSJA and my ORC -FSJ pages. The orc site is backed up and
has plenty of room, so it's really more of an opportunity for doc to
spread his load, his site is on his nickel...

I'd recommend putting the same files in two different locations, that
way you have mirrored data that is protected against an isp dying or
crashing... (sorry, I spend too much time with computers... just
be thankful I didn't suggest disk striping and RAID5... :-)

Brian, if you have more recent photos, I'll build ya another page,
your stuff was really interesting...

There is an article about MOAB trail techinques in a 4x4 performance
rag I picked up the other day...

Ken's got me thinking about getting our stuff in Four Wheeler too...
Would also give me an opportunity to try my hand at writing a
magazine article...

Joe, my little wagoneer goes over the scales at close to 3,800 lbs
with passengers and some tools!!!... Your Chief would probably tip
the scales at around 4,400 lbs pretty easily, maybe closer to 4,600
(and that's without the plow). Git yerself over to the co-op or a
gravel pit or scrap metal yard and get it weighed already... :-)

My 67 Wagoneer weighed in at 4750 front axle 2250, rear 2500
(no passengers in the vehicle, didn't own a high lift jack then...)

my 85 xj td chero = 3,500 front 2500 (w/winch) rear 1000

my 86 xj w/v6 = 3475 1875 / 1600 rear

 my 65 J-200 = 4650 2650/2000r

my 81 vw pickup <grin> = 2375 1375 / 1000 rear

my 80 Olds Diesel 4dr cutlass = 3800

my 68 mustang = 3175

my 80 vw rabbit diesel = 1675 (with me in it...)

Old Blue (wife & me in it...) 5,200

All these were on certified scales... some were done by the state
police for registration purposes. some of these weights were
confirmed on two or three scales...

how many words a minute can you type???
