Introduction :: GRENADA
-
Carib Indians inhabited Grenada when Christopher COLUMBUS discovered the island in 1498, but it remained uncolonized for more than a century. The French settled Grenada in the 17th century, established sugar estates, and imported large numbers of African slaves. Britain took the island in 1762 and vigorously expanded sugar production. In the 19th century, cacao eventually surpassed sugar as the main export crop; in the 20th century, nutmeg became the leading export. In 1967, Britain gave Grenada autonomy over its internal affairs. Full independence was attained in 1974 making Grenada one of the smallest independent countries in the Western Hemisphere. Grenada was seized by a Marxist military council on 19 October 1983. Six days later the island was invaded by US forces and those of six other Caribbean nations, which quickly captured the ringleaders and their hundreds of Cuban advisers. Free elections were reinstituted the following year and have continued since then.

Grenada relies on tourism as its main source of foreign exchange especially since the construction of an international airport in 1985. Strong performances in construction and manufacturing, together with the development of tourism and higher education - especially in medicine - contributed to growth in national output; however, economic growth remained stagnant in 2010-14, after a sizable contraction in 2009, because of the global economic slowdown's effects on tourism and remittances. Gross national saving – and wealth – has been declining since 2010.Hurricanes Ivan (2004) and Emily (2005) severely damaged the agricultural sector - particularly nutmeg and cocoa cultivation - which had been a key driver of economic growth. Grenada has rebounded from the devastating effects of the hurricanes but is now saddled with the debt burden from the rebuilding process. Public debt-to-GDP is about 110%, leaving the MITCHELL administration limited room to engage in public investments and social spending. MITCHELL in 2013 announced a structural adjustment program that includes a plan to increase tax revenue.$1.401 billion (2015 est.)$1.34 billion (2014 est.)$1.268 billion (2013 est.)note: data are in 2015 US dollarscountry comparison to the world: 199$954 million (2015 est.)4.6% (2015 est.)5.7% (2014 est.)2.4% (2013 est.)country comparison to the world: 25$13,100 (2015 est.)$12,600 (2014 est.)$12,000 (2013 est.)note: data are in 2015 US dollarscountry comparison to the world: 1173.8% of GDP (2015 est.)1.4% of GDP (2014 est.)-3.2% of GDP (2013 est.)country comparison to the world: 170household consumption: 82%government consumption: 15.3%investment in fixed capital: 17.4%investment in inventories: 0.1%exports of goods and services: 23.9%imports of goods and services: -38.7% (2015 est.)agriculture: 9.4%industry: 13.9%services: 76.7% (2015 est.)bananas, cocoa, nutmeg, mace, citrus, avocados, root crops, sugarcane, corn, vegetablesfood and beverages, textiles, light assembly operations, tourism, construction2% (2015 est.)country comparison to the world: 10659,900 (2013 est.)country comparison to the world: 187agriculture: 11%industry: 20%services: 69% (2008 est.)33.5% (2013)25% (2008)country comparison to the world: 19238% (2008 est.)lowest 10%: NA%highest 10%: NA%revenues: $254.3 millionexpenditures: $291.4 million (2015 est.)26.7% of GDP (2015 est.)country comparison to the world: 107-3.9% of GDP (2015 est.)country comparison to the world: 140110% of GDP (2012 est.)country comparison to the world: 9calendar year-1.4% (2015 est.)-0.9% (2014 est.)country comparison to the world: 286.5% (31 December 2009)6.5% (31 December 2008)country comparison to the world: 608.96% (31 December 2015 est.)9.19% (31 December 2014 est.)country comparison to the world: 93$201.1 million (31 December 2015 est.)$172.8 million (31 December 2014 est.)country comparison to the world: 181$773.7 million (31 December 2015 est.)$747.4 million (31 December 2014 est.)country comparison to the world: 173$567.5 million (31 December 2015 est.)$623.8 million (31 December 2014 est.)country comparison to the world: 170$NA-$144 million (2015 est.)-$142 million (2014 est.)country comparison to the world: 76$43.8 million (2015 est.)$42.2 million (2014 est.)country comparison to the world: 205nutmeg, bananas, cocoa, fruit and vegetables, clothing, maceNigeria 44.7%, St. Lucia 10.8%, Antigua and Barbuda 7.3%, St. Kitts and Nevis 6.6%, Dominica 6.6%, US 5.8% (2015)$310.4 million (2015 est.)$306.6 million (2014 est.)country comparison to the world: 201food, manufactured goods, machinery, chemicals, fuelTrinidad and Tobago 49.6%, US 16.4% (2015)$679 million (2013 est.)$538 million (2010 est.)country comparison to the world: 174East Caribbean dollars (XCD) per US dollar -2.7 (2015 est.)2.7 (2014 est.)2.7 (2013 est.)2.7 (2012 est.)2.7 (2011 est.)
