Now Israel went out to meet the Philistines in battle and camped beside Ebenezer while the Philistines camped in Aphek.(nas) 1Sa 4:1 καὶ ἐγενήθη ἐν ταῖς ἡμέραις ἐκείναις καὶ συναθροίζονται ἀλλόφυλοι εἰς πόλεμον ἐπὶ Ισραηλ καὶ ἐξῆλθεν Ισραηλ εἰς ἀπάντησιν αὐτοῖς εἰς πόλεμον καὶ παρεμβάλλουσιν ἐπὶ Αβενεζερ καὶ οἱ ἀλλόφυλοι παρεμβάλλουσιν ἐν Αφεκ (lxx) 1Sa 4:1 Et factum est in diebus illis, convenerunt Philisthiim in pugnam: et egressus est Israël obviam Philisthiim in prælium, et castrametatus est juxta lapidem Adjutorii. When the battle spread, Israel was defeated before the Philistines who killed about four thousand men on the battlefield.(nas) 1Sa 4:2 καὶ παρατάσσονται οἱ ἀλλόφυλοι εἰς πόλεμον ἐπὶ Ισραηλ καὶ ἔκλινεν ὁ πόλεμος καὶ ἔπταισεν ἀνὴρ Ισραηλ ἐνώπιον ἀλλοφύλων καὶ ἐπλήγησαν ἐν τῇ παρατάξει ἐν ἀγρῷ τέσσαρες χιλιάδες ἀνδρῶν (lxx) 1Sa 4:2 et instruxerunt aciem contra Israël. And when they joined battle, Israel was defeated by the Philistines, who killed about four thousand men of the army in the field.(nkjv) ======= 1 Samuel 4:3 ============ 1Sa 4:3 When the people came into the camp, the elders of Israel said, "Why has the Lord defeated us today before the Philistines? Let us take to ourselves from Shiloh the ark of the covenant of the Lord, that it may come among us and deliver us from the power of our enemies."(nas) 1Sa 4:3 καὶ ἦλθεν ὁ λαὸς εἰς τὴν παρεμβολήν καὶ εἶπαν οἱ πρεσβύτεροι Ισραηλ κατὰ τί ἔπταισεν ἡμᾶς κύριος σήμερον ἐνώπιον ἀλλοφύλων λάβωμεν τὴν κιβωτὸν τοῦ θεοῦ ἡμῶν ἐκ Σηλωμ καὶ ἐξελθέτω ἐν μέσῳ ἡμῶν καὶ σώσει ἡμᾶς ἐκ χειρὸς ἐχθρῶν ἡμῶν (lxx) 1Sa 4:3 Et reversus est populus ad castra: dixeruntque majores natu de Israël: Quare percussit nos Dominus hodie coram Philisthiim? afferamus ad nos de Silo arcam fœderis Domini, et veniat in medium nostri, ut salvet nos de manu inimicorum nostrorum.(vulgate) 1 Samuel 4:3 So when the people were come into the campe, the Elders of Israel said, Wherefore hath the Lorde smitten vs this day before ye Philistims? let vs bring the Arke of the couenant of the Lord out of Shiloh vnto vs, that when it commeth among vs, it may saue vs out of the hande of our enemies.(Geneva) 1Sa 4:3 Und da das Volk ins Lager kam, sprachen die Ältesten Israels: Warum hat uns der HERR heute schlagen lassen vor den Philistern? Let us bring the ark of the covenant of the Lord from Shiloh to us, that when it comes among us it may save us from the hand of our enemies."(nkjv) ======= 1 Samuel 4:4 ============ 1Sa 4:4 So the people sent to Shiloh, and from there they carried the ark of the covenant of the Lord of hosts who sits above the cherubim; and the two sons of Eli, Hophni and Phinehas, were there with the ark of the covenant of God.(nas) 1Sa 4:4 καὶ ἀπέστειλεν ὁ λαὸς εἰς Σηλωμ καὶ αἴρουσιν ἐκεῖθεν τὴν κιβωτὸν κυρίου καθημένου χερουβιμ καὶ ἀμφότεροι οἱ υἱοὶ Ηλι μετὰ τῆς κιβωτοῦ Οφνι καὶ Φινεες (lxx) 1Sa 4:4 Misit ergo populus in Silo, et tulerunt inde arcam fœderis Domini exercituum sedentis super cherubim: erantque duo filii Heli cum arca fœderis Dei, Ophni et Phinees.(vulgate) 1 Samuel 4:4 Then the people sent to Shiloh, & brought from thence the Arke of the couenant of the Lorde of hostes, who dwelleth betweene the Cherubims: and there were the two sonnes of Eli, Hophni, and Phinehas, with the Arke of the couenant of God.(Geneva) 1Sa 4:4 Und das Volk sandte gen Silo und ließ von da holen die Lade des Bundes des HERRN Zebaoth, der über den Cherubim sitzt. Then they understood that the ark of the Lord had come into the camp.(nas) 1Sa 4:6 καὶ ἤκουσαν οἱ ἀλλόφυλοι τῆς κραυγῆς καὶ εἶπον οἱ ἀλλόφυλοι τίς ἡ κραυγὴ ἡ μεγάλη αὕτη ἐν παρεμβολῇ τῶν Εβραίων καὶ ἔγνωσαν ὅτι κιβωτὸς κυρίου ἥκει εἰς τὴν παρεμβολήν (lxx) 1Sa 4:6 Et audierunt Philisthiim vocem clamoris, dixeruntque: Quænam est hæc vox clamoris magni in castris Hebræorum? Et cognoverunt quod arca Domini venisset in castra.(vulgate) 1 Samuel 4:6 And when the Philistims heard the noyse of the shoute, they said, What meaneth the sound of this mightie shoute in the host of the Ebrewes? and they vnderstoode, that the Arke of the Lord was come into the hoste.(Geneva) 1Sa 4:6 Da aber die Philister hörten das Geschrei solches Jauchzens, sprachen sie: Was ist das Geschrei solches großen Jauchzens in der Hebräer Lager? Und da sie erfuhren, daß die Lade des HERRN ins Lager gekommen wäre,(dhs) 1Sa 4:6 Now when the Philistines heard the noise of the shout, they said, "What does the sound of this great shout in the camp of the Hebrews mean?" Then they understood that the ark of the Lord had come into the camp.(nkjv) ======= 1 Samuel 4:7 ============ 1Sa 4:7 The Philistines were afraid, for they said, "God has come into the camp." And they said, "Woe to us! For nothing like this has happened before.(nas) 1Sa 4:7 καὶ ἐφοβήθησαν οἱ ἀλλόφυλοι καὶ εἶπον οὗτοι οἱ θεοὶ ἥκασιν πρὸς αὐτοὺς εἰς τὴν παρεμβολήν οὐαὶ ἡμῖν ἐξελοῦ ἡμᾶς κύριε σήμερον ὅτι οὐ γέγονεν τοιαύτη ἐχθὲς καὶ τρίτην (lxx) 1Sa 4:7 Timueruntque Philisthiim, dicentes: Venit Deus in castra. Et ingemuerunt, dicentes:(vulgate) 1 Samuel 4:7 And the Philistims were afraide, and saide, God is come into the hoste: therefore saide they, Wo vnto vs: for it hath not bene so heretofore.(Geneva) 1Sa 4:7 fürchteten sie sich und sprachen: Gott ist ins Lager gekommen; und sprachen weiter: Wehe uns! denn es ist zuvor nicht also gestanden.(dhs) 1Sa 4:7 So the Philistines were afraid, for they said, "God has come into the camp!" And they said, "Woe to us! For such a thing has never happened before.(nkjv) ======= 1 Samuel 4:8 ============ 1Sa 4:8 Woe to us! Who shall deliver us from the hand of these mighty gods? These are the gods who smote the Egyptians with all kinds of plagues in the wilderness.(nas) 1Sa 4:8 οὐαὶ ἡμῖν τίς ἐξελεῖται ἡμᾶς ἐκ χειρὸς τῶν θεῶν τῶν στερεῶν τούτων οὗτοι οἱ θεοὶ οἱ πατάξαντες τὴν Αἴγυπτον ἐν πάσῃ πληγῇ καὶ ἐν τῇ ἐρήμῳ (lxx) 1Sa 4:8 Væ nobis: non enim fuit tanta exultatio heri et nudiustertius: væ nobis. Quis nos salvabit de manu deorum sublimium istorum? hi sunt dii, qui percusserunt Ægyptum omni plaga in deserto.(vulgate) 1 Samuel 4:8 Wo vnto vs, who shall deliuer vs out of the hande of these mightie Gods? these are the Gods that smote the Egyptians with all the plagues in the wildernes.(Geneva) 1Sa 4:8 Wehe uns! These are the gods who struck the Egyptians with all the plagues in the wilderness.(nkjv) ======= 1 Samuel 4:9 ============ 1Sa 4:9 Take courage and be men, O Philistines, or you will become slaves to the Hebrews, as they have been slaves to you; therefore, be men and fight."(nas) 1Sa 4:9 κραταιοῦσθε καὶ γίνεσθε εἰς ἄνδρας ἀλλόφυλοι μήποτε δουλεύσητε τοῖς Εβραίοις καθὼς ἐδούλευσαν ἡμῖν καὶ ἔσεσθε εἰς ἄνδρας καὶ πολεμήσατε αὐτούς (lxx) 1Sa 4:9 Confortamini, et estote viri, Philisthiim, ne serviatis Hebræis, sicut et illi servierunt vobis: confortamini, et bellate.(vulgate) 1 Samuel 4:9 Be strong and play the men, O Philistims, that ye be not seruants vnto the Ebrewes, as they haue serued you: be valiant therefore, and fight.(Geneva) 1Sa 4:9 So seid nun getrost ihr Männer, ihr Philister, daß ihr nicht dienen müßt den Hebräern, wie sie euch gedient haben! So the man came to tell it in the city, and all the city cried out.(nas) 1Sa 4:13 καὶ ἦλθεν καὶ ἰδοὺ Ηλι ἐκάθητο ἐπὶ τοῦ δίφρου παρὰ τὴν πύλην σκοπεύων τὴν ὁδόν ὅτι ἦν ἡ καρδία αὐτοῦ ἐξεστηκυῖα περὶ τῆς κιβωτοῦ τοῦ θεοῦ καὶ ὁ ἄνθρωπος εἰσῆλθεν εἰς τὴν πόλιν ἀπαγγεῖλαι καὶ ἀνεβόησεν ἡ πόλις (lxx) 1Sa 4:13 Cumque ille venisset, Heli sedebat super sellam contra viam spectans. Vir autem ille postquam ingressus est, nuntiavit urbi: et ululavit omnis civitas.(vulgate) 1 Samuel 4:13 And when hee came, loe, Eli sate vpon a seate by the wayside, wayting: for his heart feared for the Arke of God and when the man came into the citie to tell it, all the citie cried out.(Geneva) 1Sa 4:13 Und siehe, als er hineinkam, saß Eli auf dem Stuhl, daß er den Weg sähe; denn sein Herz war zaghaft über die Lade Gottes. Then the man came hurriedly and told Eli.(nas) 1Sa 4:14 καὶ ἤκουσεν Ηλι τὴν φωνὴν τῆς βοῆς καὶ εἶπεν τίς ἡ βοὴ τῆς φωνῆς ταύτης καὶ ὁ ἄνθρωπος σπεύσας εἰσῆλθεν καὶ ἀπήγγειλεν τῷ Ηλι (lxx) 1Sa 4:14 Et audivit Heli sonitum clamoris, dixitque: Quis est hic sonitus tumultus hujus? At ille festinavit, et venit, et nuntiavit Heli.(vulgate) 1 Samuel 4:14 And when Eli heard the noyse of the crying, he sayd, What meaneth this noyse of the tumult? and the man came in hastily, and tolde Eli.(Geneva) 1Sa 4:14 Und da Eli das laute Schreien hörte, fragte er: Was ist das für ein lautes Getümmel? Da kam der Mann eilend und sagte es Eli an.(dhs) 1Sa 4:14 When Eli heard the noise of the outcry, he said, "What does the sound of this tumult mean?" And the man came quickly and told Eli.(nkjv) ======= 1 Samuel 4:15 ============ 1Sa 4:15 Now Eli was ninety-eight years old, and his eyes were set so that he could not see.(nas) 1Sa 4:15 καὶ Ηλι υἱὸς ἐνενήκοντα ἐτῶν καὶ οἱ ὀφθαλμοὶ αὐτοῦ ἐπανέστησαν καὶ οὐκ ἔβλεπεν καὶ εἶπεν Ηλὶ τοῖς ἀνδράσιν τοῖς περιεστηκόσιν αὐτῷ τίς ἡ φωνὴ τοῦ ἤχους τούτου (lxx) 1Sa 4:15 Heli autem erat nonaginta et octo annorum, et oculi ejus caligaverant, et videre non poterat.(vulgate) 1 Samuel 4:15 (Nowe Eli was fourescore and eighteene yeere olde, and his eyes were dimme that hee could not see)(Geneva) 1Sa 4:15 Eli aber war achtundneunzig Jahre alt, und seine Augen waren dunkel, daß er nicht sehen konnte.(dhs) 1Sa 4:15 Eli was ninety-eight years old, and his eyes were so dim that he could not see.(nkjv) ======= 1 Samuel 4:16 ============ 1Sa 4:16 The man said to Eli, "I am the one who came from the battle line. Indeed, I escaped from the battle line today." And he said, "How did things go, my son?"(nas) 1Sa 4:16 καὶ ὁ ἀνὴρ σπεύσας προσῆλθεν πρὸς Ηλι καὶ εἶπεν αὐτῷ ἐγώ εἰμι ὁ ἥκων ἐκ τῆς παρεμβολῆς κἀγὼ πέφευγα ἐκ τῆς παρατάξεως σήμερον καὶ εἶπεν τί τὸ γεγονὸς ῥῆμα τέκνον (lxx) 1Sa 4:16 Et dixit ad Heli: Ego sum qui veni de prælio, et ego qui de acie fugi hodie. Cui ille ait: Quid actum est, fili mi?(vulgate) 1 Samuel 4:16 And the man sayd vnto Eli, I came from the armie, and I fled this day out of the hoste: and he sayd, What thing is done, my sonne?(Geneva) 1Sa 4:16 Der Mann aber sprach zu Eli: Ich komme und bin heute aus dem Heer geflohen. Er aber sprach: Wie geht es zu, mein Sohn?(dhs) 1Sa 4:16 Then the man said to Eli, "I am he who came from the battle. And I fled today from the battle line." And he said, "What happened, my son?"(nkjv) ======= 1 Samuel 4:17 ============ 1Sa 4:17 Then the one who brought the news replied, "Israel has fled before the Philistines and there has also been a great slaughter among the people, and your two sons also, Hophni and Phinehas, are dead, and the ark of God has been taken."(nas) 1Sa 4:17 καὶ ἀπεκρίθη τὸ παιδάριον καὶ εἶπεν πέφευγεν ἀνὴρ Ισραηλ ἐκ προσώπου ἀλλοφύλων καὶ ἐγένετο πληγὴ μεγάλη ἐν τῷ λαῷ καὶ ἀμφότεροι οἱ υἱοί σου τεθνήκασιν καὶ ἡ κιβωτὸς τοῦ θεοῦ ἐλήμφθη (lxx) 1Sa 4:17 Respondens autem ille qui nuntiabat: Fugit, inquit, Israël coram Philisthiim, et ruina magna facta est in populo: insuper et duo filii tui mortui sunt, Ophni et Phinees, et arca Dei capta est.(vulgate) 1 Samuel 4:17 Then the messenger answered and sayd, Israel is fled before the Philistims, and there hath bene also a great slaughter among the people: and moreouer thy two sonnes, Hophni and Phinehas are dead, and the Arke of God is taken.(Geneva) 1Sa 4:17 Da antwortete der Verkündiger und sprach: Israel ist geflohen vor den Philistern, und ist eine große Schlacht im Volk geschehen, und deine zwei Söhne, Hophni und Pinehas, sind gestorben; dazu die Lade Gottes ist genommen.(dhs) 1Sa 4:17 So the messenger answered and said, "Israel has fled before the Philistines, and there has been a great slaughter among the people. Also your two sons, Hophni and Phinehas, are dead; and the ark of God has been captured."(nkjv) ======= 1 Samuel 4:18 ============ 1Sa 4:18 When he mentioned the ark of God, Eli fell off the seat backward beside the gate, and his neck was broken and he died, for he was old and heavy.
